This morning my father and I were talking about one thing and another. "If they come out with a vaccine (for COVID-19), would you get it?" he asked.
"That depends. If it comes out before Election Day, or even Inauguration Day, I'd have to wonder whether its approval was rushed."
Afterward, I found myself thinking about some of the worst bike parts I've ever used and owned. They were introduced as the lightest, best, strongest or "must-have" in some other way. I can't help but to think that I, and some riding buddies who also experienced problems like the ones I incurred, were "guinea pigs" for the makers of those components.
Of course, my collapsing Nuke Proof hubs weren't quite as catastrophic as a faulty vaccine might be. The shop from which I bought those hubs replaced them with other hubs and equipment. But what do you do if the vaccine causes some physical or medical problem that can't be reversed?

I trust Dr Fauci. Right now, he's got advice on flu vaccine that I think makes as much sense as most of his other advice:

That’s what top infectious disease specialist Dr. Anthony Fauci told actress Jennifer Garner during an Instagram Live on Thursday.
Fauci is strategic about getting his own flu shot. He told Garner he gets the vaccine “towards the middle and end of October.”
“I wouldn’t necessarily get it now, in September, because there is evidence that, in fact, the immunity might wear off when you get to February and early March...,” he said, calling the advice his “unofficial” suggestion on timing.
I think he's not planning to be a guinea pig either with some "maybe it'll work" solution, nor wait until it is too late. Two reasons I value his advice and "unofficial" suggestions more than that of his boss who was also born in New York.
Steve--Dr. Fauci is the William Everett Koop of this generation: He speaks science to power, whether or not they want to hear it. I, too, trust him. Trump, not so much.
ReplyDeleteBy the way: Although both were born and raised in New York, only one of them is a New Yorker, and it isn't the President. While he is from the Big Apple, he has never really lived in it: He has always lived in a bubble of wealth and privilege. In fact, I'd daresay that Trump disdains, or even hates, this city and others.
