Are Acorns An Energy Food?

Are squirrels genetically programmed to play chicken with cyclists?

It sure seems as if they are.  It seems that any time I pedal through a leafy area, one of those fuzzy creatures hops and scampers as close to my wheel as it can without getting tangled in my spokes.  Then it scampers away.

That leads me to wonder:  How would a squirrel ride a bicycle?

The image is available as a T-shirt.  I think it's kinda cute.

  1. Hummmm, our tiny native red squirrels are cute but the nasty imported infectious grey are vicious vermin.

  2. I've seen a few squirels dart across my path as I'm riding, but I don't mind them. They're not vermin, they're just woodland creatures living out their lives. I'd rather see them than skunks, which I've had the misfortune to see several times on the local bike paths (and 12 ft isn't much maneuvering space!) Fortunately I've never been sprayed.

Last year one of my neighbors came up to me while I was raking the front yard to ask whether she could take some of the acorns that fell from the two giant oak trees. I don't know why she wanted them, but I had no need for them (and when the cover the ground, they tend to act like ball bearings), so I said sure. I didn't ask what she was going to do with them, but eating them isn't out of the question. Around that same time I had read in the paper that acorns were plentiful that year and some people had taken to eating them.
