On Our Bikes

Bruce Gerncser’s blog has become one of my regular reads over the past decade or so.

In a recent post, “Me and My Bike, he wrote, “I rode my bike everywhere:  school, work, ball practice, roller skating, fishing, to the swimming pool and everyplace else I wanted to go.” But his bike wasn’t just a means of transportation:  “On my bike I was free of my mom’s manic behavior and my father’s indifference.” I can relate to that:  Whatever mental health I had, or still have, is attributable to riding whatever bikes I have had.

I will write more about Bruce—and another person I’ve mentioned recently—in an upcoming post.
